I walked into an area about a mile from the nearest road, trying to get a photograph of the sun rising above the river valley below. I was a bit behind schedule and thought I wasn't going to make it in time. But the morning was really socked in by fog and you never really know how that's going to play out so I kept going. The last 10-15 minute leg was without trails and as I finally reached the location I was looking for, the fog had just lifted...was sinking into the valley below...the sky was amazing and although the sun's disc had crested a few minutes before, it was still held back some by the lingering fog. I frantically setup the tripod...I just did not know how long the view would persist. I got some exposures made in the next 30-60 seconds, and the fog once more covered the entire view - wow, was I ever lucky!

I studied at the University of Iowa's School of Art, where I majored in Photography and minored in two other mediums: Painting and Serigraphy. The landscape is a favored subject in my photography, paintings and drawings; while birds are a favorite subject in my serigraphy and drawings. The photographic landscape is treated in large and medium formats. In painting I prefer a plein air approach and these works are smaller in scale. My work in serigraphy plays upon a more graphic approach of shape, color and line. My interests have always been torn between the camera and the canvas, between birds and the landscape; now particularly the "Prairie".
