Description
This is one of a series of birds "portraits' I have indulged in over the years...the American Goldfinch is the state bird for where I reside (Iowa). The female is a small "finch-sized" beautiful olive yellow bird lacking the more striking color of the male - during the early spring through summer time. During the winter the female (like the male) turns a subdued drab brownish color. They have a bright cheery song and a bouncy/undulating flight...a favorite bird of the countryside for sure. One unusual trait with the Goldfinches is they do not nest until toward the end of summer, when thistle down is more readily available for their nesting materials...probably one of the latest nesting birds in their range over North America.
