Description
This is one of a series of birds "portraits' I have indulged in over the years...the American Goldfinch is the state bird for where I reside (Iowa). The male is a small "finch-sized" beautiful bright yellow bird with great contrasting black and white markings on its wings and forehead - during the early spring through summer time. During the winter the male (like the female) turns a drab brownish green color - definitely a plumage change! They have a bright cheery song and a bouncy/undulating flight...a favorite bird of the countryside for sure. One unusual trait with the Goldfinches is they do not nest until toward the end of summer, when thistle down is more readily available for their nesting materials...probably one of the latest nesting birds in their range over North America.
